On November 17 – 18, Moscow hosted the second annual conference “Railway Transportation of Mining and Smelting Freight in the RF: gondola railcar parks operation under the terms of transition to 100% privately owned railcars”.
The participants discussed principal tendencies of the market functioning with regard to the railway transportation of mining and smelting freight, current development perspectives for the industry, searching methods for compromise decision to ensure successful business. Among other issues, they discussed changes in the market configuration and problems of adapting car traffic volume management techniques to such conditions. Other issues on the agenda included consolidation of the railcar parks. At the conference, the transportation companies’ representatives evaluated the balance of interests between railcar owners and mining and smelting plants, as well as price formation in the transportation services market, including theoretical and objective factors. They also evaluated the significance of transport departments of the major mining and smelting dispatchers when the rail transportation is organized by an impersonal park of railcars owned by various private operators.
Vyacheslav Stanislavsky, NFC First Deputy Director General, based on the NFC example described opportunities for increasing the cargo owners’ transportation security in view of the increasing tendency of mining and smelting freight transportation complicated by the shortage of all-purpose gondola cars the railway companies are experiencing at the moment.
